The Life of General Francis Marion eBook M L Mason Locke Weems
My hometown was named after Francis Marion so I knew a little about him, but when my genealogy search indicated that some of my South Carolina ancestors might have fought with him in the Revolution, I wanted to know more. I think what was so fascinating about this book was the thought that it was written by one of Francis Marion's contemporaries -- almost a first-hand account of his involvement in the war. The author was known to be a stickler for the facts as well. A must-read for those interested in the South's involvement in the American Revolution.Product details

The Life of General Francis Marion eBook M L Mason Locke Weems Reviews
Weems was a mid-18th Century preacher - and boy, can you sure tell it in his writing style!! Flowery doesn't even begin to cover it! If he was anywhere near accurate in his treatment of the subject, it might (just maybe!) be worth sitting through it, but he plays so fast and loose with the facts that the co-author, who served with Marion) wanted his name removed from this work. I didn't last through the first chapter. Weems' adulation and hero worship of Marion, set in his "unique" writing style, made it, for me, completely unreadable. I am very well-read, including many different schools of writing from Shakespeare to Hugo to Twain, Poe and Doyle, but this one flat did me in.
The writing style of this book really helped the reader to relate and imagine how everything happened and the voice and attitude behind the dialogue. It's a little different from your average biography, and may not qualify as one for some schooling, but I would considerate it one. And if you're genuinely just interested in history, it's a good read.
This is quite possibly one of the poorest written books that I have ever read. Both the writing skill and content were very poor. It's a shame someone as distinguished as Francis Marion should have such a poorly written testiment to his illustrious career. The book is more about Weems, the author, than about the Marion the subject. The 'Swamp Fox' by Robert D. Bass is a much more accurate account of Marion's life and accomplishments.
Good Book
Loved the book, even though there may have been some embellishments. The history of General Marion should be a must read along with Gen. Washington. Both were God's instruments in winning our independence
This is the guy that my great grandpa was named after.
For history buffs, this is an interesting historical novel, even though the author "puffed" certain aspects of the history of "The Swamp Fox". There are other tomes that cover his exploits much more accurately. However, I do recommend reading this book.
