Londinium.

Britain has lost its battle with Rome and the city lies in ruins.

But the Romans, under threat in their homeland from barbarian invaders, have retreated. The war is not over.

As Emperor of Britain, Arthur Imperator must reunite the fractured British tribes to lead them back to victory - and reclaim the kingdom.

The Roman emperor Maximian is bound to strike again. But instead of waiting passively for him to attack, Arthur resolves to risk everything by leading his men to the Roman border and confronting the enemy head on.

Can Arthur persuade Rome’s enemies to join him and create a strong enough force to take down Gaul?

Or will Maximian’s might once again prove too strong for the British people?

Arthur Invictus combines myth with historical fact to tell the compelling story of the rise of a legendary British Emperor. It is perfect for fans of fans of Tim Severin, Robyn Young and Simon Scarrow.

Arthur Invictus Forgotten Emperor Book 3 Paul Bannister 9781523388233 Books

This final work of the trilogy is another fine example of the truly awesome and intricate research of author Paul Bannister into the 3rd c. Roman military and relevant tribes, e.g., Celts, Franks, Picts, Gallic, Saxons, Huns, etc., of that era. As with the previous two novels, Arthur Britannica and Arthur Imperator, the focus and vehicle for our education is “Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius, Dutiful, Fortunate, the Unconquered,” also known historically as Arth, the Bear, and Caros, for this man was real.

There are so many enlightening real similarities between this man, first emperor of Britain (286 to 293 AD) Carausius, and the Arthur of legend, that the case is well made that he probably was the original origin of the legend. It’s a shame that until now he has been so little known for his achievements were certainly noteworthy.

This trilogy is not a love story; it’s a story of the toils of a man pulling together tribes while constantly fighting betrayals, invaders, and the constant threat of Rome launching efforts to retake Britain from his hands. This series is a work based upon military history of the time focusing on the deeds of one who had remained mostly hidden until a horde of his emperor coins were found in April of 2010.

This trilogy is educational. There is dialogue, but not a lot as in romantic historical novels. Of course some liberty is taken with some elements, as with all historical fiction, but the main line of Carausius, the Bear, Arth, is about as close as is reasonable and the military considerations are right on.

For those interested in some of the background of the real man, Carausius, the Bear, and other Roman relevant facts of the time, you will find the closing chapters, “Historical Notes,” and “Arthur and Carausius: legend and links” well worth your time.

Arthur Invictus Forgotten Emperor Book 3 Paul Bannister 9781523388233 Books Reviews

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about northern European history. I'm excited to learn about my ancestors past
This is a very good series for those interested in the end days of Roman Britain. Bannister employs all the sorcery and folklore of the period very well.
It kept my interest and provided details about this period of which I wasn't aware.
Have to admit that I kept looking an evolution to Mallory's characters that never happened.
That doesn't take away from it. Probably more accurate to the times.
Continuing the saga of Arthur and his war against Rome the author continues to entertain as well as continue
to develop the main characters. The story continues to battles and intrigue of the earlier story. Fast paced and will keep you
up late.
Wow!...another great read from author, journalist and former National Enquirer lead reporter, Paul Bannister. This third installment of the Lord of the Narrow Sea trilogy, along with the first and second 'Arthur' novels, begs to be put on the silver screen. Most captivating, entertaining and educational...learned a great deal about early western European history, mythology, politics and culture in the process of enjoying a great historical-fiction yarn. Can't wait for the sequel(s) and prequel(s)!
A different take on Arthur. I love trivialities, and this was a good one. Be prepared for some graphic gore, but otherwise an interesting view of who Arthur was. I never heard of this king. But after reading these books it sounds like he could be based on this king.
I really enjoyed the first two parts of this trilogy, and the third part totally lives up to the rest. Arthur isn't the usual romantic hero of the Middle Ages, he's a hard, somewhat brutish Romano-British soldier, and he's a secret pagan who needs to recruit a Christian army. There's great historical detail in these books, fine research and a fast pace. It's good entertainment for the price of a cup of coffee!
